Cast the First Stone

One of the most fateful twists in Richard Kimble's life on the run is the way he is constantly running into supposed paragons of society who are actually pretty slimy, while he himself, branded a murderer and shunned, is a veritable saint. The very first episode, FEAR IN A DESERT CITY, sets the tone: High-and-mighty politician Brian Keith is really a scumbag, but Kimble's the one who gets hassled by creepy cop Harry Townes. Though smug, self-satisfied citizens are often quick to condemn Kimble, which among them is truly as sin-free as he?

This is thrown into an especially ironic light when one considers the various law-enforcement officers Kimble has to deal with, of whom at least 99 percent are morally inferior to the falsely convicted man they are hunting down. Even Lieutenant Gerard is not an exception. To be sure, his uncompromising respect for the letter of the law sets him head and shoulders above all the other cops on the show. Yet he does not disdain from ruthlessly manipulating innocent bystanders while striving to get his man, as we learn in the episode
TEN THOUSAND PIECES OF SILVER. Still worse, though, Gerard shows no gratitude whatsoever for Kimble's repeated efforts to save him and his next-of-kin from life-threatening perils. With enemies like Kimble, who needs bodyguards?
