Forerunners

The story of a decent man, convicted unjustly, on the run and at odds with society, surely did not first crop up when that fateful train wreck freed Richard Kimble en route to the death house. Elements of this classic scenario can be found in great works of world literature dating back hundreds of years, not to mention more recently in real life jurisprudence as well as in such big-screen precursors as The Greatest Show on Earth, the 1952 Cecil B. DeMille picture in which Jimmy Stewart played a fugitive doctor, wanted for the murder of his wife, who takes odd jobs at a circus and uses his medical knowledge to do good for those around him, even if it costs him his freedom. (Many thanks to empostal@aol.com for pointing out the parallels between this movie and The Fugitive.) A not-so-famous episode of The Three Stooges also bears an almost frightening resemblance to the saga of Dr. Kimble, giving a glimpse into the humorous side of his otherwise grimly fateful predicament . . .
